A Glance at Issue #1, Oct/Now
A Letter From the Editor
-
What happens when you stop playing by the rules and just play? You become one of the lucky few that have realized that the only rules worth playing by are your own. Anyone familiar with Bill Watterson’s iconic characters of Calvin and Hobbes has experienced first hand the random joy that Calvinball brings. The rules are never the same. The imagination runs wild and the landscape changes as frequently as the base numbers.
-
The Feral Pages is a place for writers to examine the possibilities of playing Calvinball with their stories. The premise revolves around the idea that through examining genres and deconstructing them, writers can achieve a writing style that is free of convention and is truly their own. The rules start to erode. Genre becomes happenstance and fiction returns to its wild state, a feral sensibility, if you will.
So what can you expect from The Feral Pages? To understand how to make your writing wild, you must understand the genres that you wish to violate. You’ll find solid genre pieces here, all prime examples of their craft.
You’ll find stories that take those genres and shred them apart in their teeth. You’ll read stories from authors who have stepped outside their comfort zone in an attempt to push the boundaries of what they write.
You’ll get a glimpse of genre theory in the form of articles and interviews. You’ll find links that take you to other sites that flow in the same vein as The Feral Pages. Mostly, you’ll see that writing at the fringe of genre is exciting and new.
So sit back and enjoy issue #1’s line-up.
